Magnolia stencils are reusable silk screen stencils with an adhesive backing.

They allow you to create crisp, detailed designs using chalk paste, ink, bleach art gel, or other mediums.

Each stencil can typically be reused 8–10 times depending on care and cleaning.

After each use:

  1. Rinse the stencil with cool water.

  2. Remove excess paste or ink.

  3. Lay the stencil sticky side up to air dry.

  4. Once dry, place it back on the backing sheet.

Tips:

• Do not soak stencils in water
• Avoid baby wipes (they can damage adhesive)
• Disinfecting wipes can help restore stickiness

Magnolia stencils can be used on a wide variety of surfaces including:

• Wood
• Glass
• Chalkboards
• Mirrors
• Ceramic
• Fabric
• Metal
• Canvas

For best results, surfaces should be clean, dry, and smooth before applying the stencil.

No complicated tools are required.

Most projects use:

• A Magnolia stencil
• Chalk paste or ink
• A squeegee or applicator tool

These simple tools allow you to create professional-looking designs quickly and easily.

Yes.

Magnolia stencils are designed to be reused multiple times when properly cleaned and cared for.

Typical lifespan is 8–10 uses, depending on how they are used and maintained.

Stencil adhesive can weaken over time due to:

• Dust or lint buildup
• Excess paste or ink residue
• Improper cleaning

Cleaning the back of the stencil with a disinfecting wipe can often help restore some tackiness.

Chalk paste is a soft crafting paste that dries to a smooth, chalk-like finish.

It works best on non-porous surfaces such as chalkboards, glass, mirrors, and sealed wood.

On non-porous surfaces, designs can often be removed with water.

When stored properly, chalk paste typically lasts around 6 months.

To extend its life:

• Store below 80°F
• Clean jar rims before sealing
• Lightly mist the surface with distilled water before closing

What is Permanent Ink?

Magnolia Permanent Ink creates long-lasting designs on fabrics and heat-safe surfaces.

After drying, the design must be heat set to become permanent.

Ink is commonly used on:

• T-shirts
• Tote bags
• Pillows
• ceramics and glassware

After the design dries for 24 hours:

Iron method

• Medium heat
• No steam
• 2 minutes front and back
• Use parchment paper barrier

Heat press

• 305°F
• 30 seconds front and back

Both Chalk Paste and Permanent Ink are designed to be used with Magnolia reusable silk screen stencils, but they are intended for different types of surfaces.

Chalk Paste

• Best for hard surfaces such as chalkboards, wood, glass, mirrors, and metal
• Dries to a soft, chalk-like finish
• On non-porous surfaces it can often be removed with water
• Great for seasonal décor or designs you may want to change later

Permanent Ink

• Designed for fabrics and heat-safe surfaces
• Creates a permanent design once heat set
• Commonly used on items like t-shirts, tote bags, pillows, and ceramics

If you want a removable décor design, use Chalk Paste.
If you want a permanent fabric or heat-set design, use Ink.

Stencil bleeding usually happens when too much paste or ink is applied, or when the stencil isn’t fully adhered to the surface.

To help prevent bleeding:

• Make sure your surface is clean and dry before applying the stencil
• Press the stencil down firmly, especially around detailed areas
• Apply thin layers of paste or ink rather than heavy amounts
• Use a squeegee at a slight angle with light pressure
• Remove excess paste from the stencil with the squeegee before lifting it

Less product is usually better—a small amount of paste goes a long way.

Layering colors is a fun way to add dimension to your projects.

For best results:

  1. Apply the first color through the stencil.

  2. Remove the stencil and allow the design to dry completely.

  3. If using the same stencil again, clean and dry it before repositioning.

  4. Align the stencil carefully over the original design.

  5. Apply the second color.

For small layered accents, you can also apply multiple colors in one pass by placing small amounts of different paste colors on the stencil and blending them with your squeegee.

Allow each layer to dry before adding the next to avoid smudging.

Mistakes happen, especially when you're learning, but many chalk paste projects can be corrected.

On non-porous surfaces (like glass, mirrors, or chalkboards):

• Simply wipe the design away with a damp cloth or rinse with water
• Dry the surface completely and try again

On sealed wood or painted surfaces:

• Use a damp cloth to gently wipe the area before the paste fully cures
• If the design has already dried, lightly sanding the surface can help remove it

On porous surfaces:

Paste may stain slightly, so it's best to test surfaces before applying designs.

The good news is Magnolia stencils make it easy to try again and create a new design.

If your Chalk Paste becomes thick or slightly dried, it can often be restored with a small amount of water.

Follow these steps:

  1. Add a few drops of distilled water to the jar.

  2. Stir thoroughly using a stir stick or multi-tool.

  3. Continue mixing until the paste returns to a smooth, yogurt-like consistency.

If needed, add additional drops of water a little at a time, mixing well between each addition.

Helpful tips:

• Always add small amounts of water—too much at once can make the paste runny.
• Store jars tightly sealed when not in use.
• Keeping the jar rim clean helps maintain a better seal.
• Storing paste in a cool environment below 80°F helps extend its life.

With proper care and storage, Magnolia Chalk Paste typically has a shelf life of around 6 months.

Rub-On Transfers are decorative transfer sheets that allow designs to be burnished onto surfaces without paint or paste.

They are commonly used on:

• Wood surfaces
• Home décor pieces
• signs and frames
• furniture accents

Rub-Ons create a painted or printed appearance and are typically a one-time use product.

  1. Cut the design from the sheet.

  2. Peel away the backing.

  3. Place the transfer on the surface.

  4. Use a burnishing tool to rub the design firmly.

  5. Slowly peel away the top film.

No.

Rub-On Transfers are designed for one-time use. Once the design has been transferred to a surface, it cannot be reused.

Rub-On Transfers adhere best to smooth, non-textured surfaces such as:

• Painted wood
• Finished signs
• Furniture
• frames
• smooth craft surfaces

Highly textured surfaces may prevent the transfer from adhering properly.

Yes.

For projects that will be handled frequently, applying a clear sealer can help protect the design and extend the life of your finished piece.

  1. Bleach Art Gel allows you to create bleached stencil designs on fabric.

It works best on cotton or blended fabrics like T-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, and banners.

The gel lightens the fabric color rather than adding pigment, creating a vintage distressed effect.

Use in a well-ventilated area and always rinse fabric after the bleaching process is complete.

  1. Scorch Paste creates a wood-burned look using heat.

After applying through a stencil and allowing the paste to dry, heat activates the burning effect to create a permanent engraved style design.

    Best used on:

    • unfinished wood
    • natural fabrics

Avoid using on sealed or painted surfaces.
